🇺🇸 Today, on the second of Tammuz, we commemorate the Hilula (yahrtzeit) of Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka, who was the grandfather of our holy Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, may his memory be a blessing. Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka was the distinguished student of the Baal Shem Tov, and he referred to him as "faithful in his household." He was among the first students of the Baal Shem Tov to immigrate to the Land of Israel. In the year 5570 (1810), he passed away on the second of Tammuz and was buried in the ancient cemetery of Tiberias, in the section of the students of the Baal Shem Tov. On his tombstone, it is inscribed: "Here lies the righteous and holy Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka, may his memory be a blessing."
Rabbi Eliezer Berland, may he be well, composed a prayer a few years ago to recite on his holy gravesite. Here is the complete prayer:
Our Master and Ruler of the world, Almighty, who nothing can withhold from You a plan, as I stand here beside the Holy Zion of Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka, the disciple of the Baal Shem Tov, who was constantly attached to the Lord for twenty-four hours without any distraction whatsoever. Day and night he secluded himself in supernal cleaving until he merited to be included in the ancient holiness. And thereafter he perpetuated the joy of our Rabbi forever, and afterward, the joy of our Rabbi Nachman, the grandson of the Baal Shem Tov.
Please have mercy and grace upon me, the One who is capable of all. Let me receive a spark from his infinite soul, and in the merit of this holy spark that will pass within me, may I also merit to be completely attached to You for twenty-four hours. May I be attached to You without any distraction whatsoever, and from now on, may the name of God not be removed from before my eyes. May the verse be fulfilled in me, "And without You, no one can raise his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt." And may the name of God guide and lead me for twenty-four hours, and in the merit of this, may I be able to guard my eyes and no longer see any strange woman, God forbid, and no strange woman at all. And may I only merit to study the complete Talmud day and night without any interruption at all. And in the merit of Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka, who merited to perpetuate the soul of Rabbi Simcha and his son Rabbi Nachman forever, may I also merit to always conduct myself with holiness and purity. And may I also merit to perpetuate holy and pure souls forever, that they may bring the complete redemption until I also merit to perpetuate the soul of our Rabbi Nachman ben Simcha ben Faiga, who will bring the complete redemption and build the Holy Temple speedily in our days, Amen, forever, Selah, and witness.

Maître et Souverain du monde, Tout-Puissant, à qui rien ne peut résister, alors que je me tiens ici près du Saint Sion du rabbin Nachman de Horodenka, le disciple du Baal Shem Tov, qui était constamment attaché au Seigneur pendant vingt-quatre heures sans aucune distraction. Jour et nuit, il se retirait dans une adhérence supérieure jusqu'à ce qu'il mérite d'être inclus dans l'ancienne sainteté. Et ensuite, il perpétua la joie de notre rabbin pour toujours, puis la joie de notre rabbin Nachman, le petit-fils du Baal Shem Tov.

Et que le nom de Dieu me guide et me conduise pendant vingt-quatre heures, et par ce mérite, puis-je être capable de garder mes yeux et de ne plus voir aucune femme étrangère, Dieu nous en préserve, et aucune femme étrangère du tout. Et puis-je mériter d'étudier jour et nuit le Talmud complet sans aucune interruption. Et par le mérite du rabbin Nachman de Horodenka, qui a mérité de perpétuer l'âme du rabbin Simcha et de son fils le rabbin Nachman pour toujours, puis-je aussi mériter de toujours me conduire avec sainteté et pureté. Et puis-je aussi mériter de perpétuer pour toujours des âmes saintes et pures, afin qu'elles puissent apporter la rédemption complète jusqu'à ce que je mérite également de perpétuer l'âme de notre rabbin Nachman ben Simcha ben Faiga, qui apportera la rédemption complète et construira le Saint Temple rapidement de nos jours, Amen, pour toujours, Selah, et témoin.

Rabbi Nachman of Horodenka, may his memory be a blessing, was the seventh generation descendant of the Maharal of Prague, belonging to the renowned Gaon family and the House of David. He was one of the early disciples of the Baal Shem Tov, the holy master, and among those closest to him. He practiced great piety and asceticism, and testified about himself: "Nevertheless, I could not rid myself of foreign thoughts until I compelled myself to the wisdom of the Baal Shem Tov." Rabbi Pinchas of Koretz, may his memory be a blessing, said about him that as long as Rabbi Nachman was in Russia, the Russians could not conquer Poland. His friend, Rabbi Pinchas of Koretz, expressed that when it is mentioned in the books that all those who recount the praise of such righteous individuals deal with a miraculous act, it refers to Rabbi Nachman of Horodna.
When Rabbi Nachman, may his memory be a blessing, was engaged to a righteous and pious woman whose entire desire was to serve the Lord, he asked his teacher, the Baal Shem Tov: "What can I give her as a betrothal gift?" The Baal Shem Tov replied, "When you have a son, you shall name him Tzedek, and he will be my son-in-law." After their wedding, when all the guests left their home and even our teacher, Rabbi Nachman, did not return for several months, his wife turned to the Baal Shem Tov. When her husband saw him, he asked for an explanation, and Rabbi Nachman replied, "Know that when you give birth to a son, your wife will pass away from this world, but she, knowing his greatness, agreed. At the time of her birth, she prayed that she would have at least a month with her son, and her wish was granted. Therefore, Rabbi Nachman assumed that it was a favorable time, and if she had asked for a longer period, she would have received it. Their son was named Shmacha (Joy) after her passing, and his father's name in the land of Israel was Shmacha."
Rabbi Nachman yearned greatly to ascend to the Land of Israel, but his teacher delayed him. However, after the passing of the Baal Shem Tov, he went to the grave of the Baal Shem Tov with Rabbi Yosef Kaminka, may his memory be a blessing. When he returned from the cemetery, he rejoiced greatly and declared, "The Baal Shem Tov instructed me to go to the Holy Land." Rabbi Yosef was amazed and asked, "Where did he speak to you?" Rabbi Nachman wondered and said, "Did you not see that he spoke to me and stood beside me?" He ascended to the Holy Land with thirty more of the Baal Shem Tov's disciples. This marked the foundation and basis for the second wave of the Baal Shem Tov's disciples attributed to Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Vitebsk, may his memory be a blessing.
After his ascent to the Holy Land on the 2nd of Tammuz, 5605, on a holy Sabbath night, while dressed in Sabbath garments, after sanctifying the cup and during the meal, Rabbi Mendel of Peremyshlan found him studying a worn-out copy of the book "Zohar." Rabbi Mendel responded by returning his pure soul to its Creator. Rabbi Nachman was buried in the cemetery of Tiberias, in the section designated for the disciples of the Baal Shem Tov, may their memory be a blessing.

Rabbi Nachman lui a répondu : "Sachez que lorsque mon fils naîtra, ma femme quittera ce monde, mais elle a accepté en connaissance de cause et a prié lors de sa naissance pour qu'elle puisse être avec son fils pendant au moins un mois. Sa prière a été exaucée, et j'en ai déduit qu'à ce moment-là, c'était la volonté divine. Si elle avait demandé plus longtemps, elle aurait également été exaucée, et son nom en Israël est 'Simcha' (joie)". Après le décès de son père chez sa fille la Juste Adèle, le nom de son père a été donné à son fils, Rabbi Shmuel. Il a été appelé "Nachman" en référence à son grand-père, notre maître Rabbi Nachman de Horodenka. Il a hérité d'une source de sagesse, Rabbi Nachman ben Shmuel ben Faiga de Breslav (que son souvenir soit une bénédiction).
Il aspirait beaucoup à monter en Terre sainte, mais son maître l'en empêchait. Cependant, après le départ du Baal Shem Tov, il se rendit sur la tombe du Baal Shem Tov avec Rabbi Yosef Kaminka (que son souvenir soit une bénédiction). Quand il revint de la maison des vivants, il était rempli d'une grande joie et proclama : "Le Baal Shem Tov m'a ordonné de me rendre en Terre sainte !" Rabbi Yosef était très surpris et demanda : "Où vous a-t-il parlé ?" Rabbi Nachman s'étonna et dit : "N'avez-vous pas vu qu'il parlait avec moi et se tenait à mes côtés ?" Et il monta en Terre sainte avec trente autres disciples du Baal Shem Tov. Cette montée en Terre sainte fut la base et le fondement de la deuxième montée des disciples du Baal Shem Tov, qui est attribuée à Rabbi Menachem Mendel de Vitebsk (que son souvenir soit une bénédiction).
Après son arrivée en Terre sainte, le 2 Tamouz 5605 (1845), pendant un saint Chabbat alors qu'il portait des vêtements de Chabbat, après avoir récité le Kiddouch sur la coupe et se trouvant à table, Rabbi Mendel de Pirmishlan (que son souvenir soit une bénédiction) le trouva en train d'étudier le livre du Zohar avec passion. Il répondit ainsi à l'âme pure de son Créateur et fut enterré dans la cour de la maison des vivants à Tiberiade, dans la section des disciples du Baal Shem Tov (que son souvenir soit une bénédiction).
